Favorite Dead Line |
Went to a spirituality workshop and was asked what lyrics in music were instrumental in my daily living. Without hesitation I remarked "Once in awhile you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right" (Scarlet Begonias) I was wonder what lines are influential for other heads. Peace.

Re: Favorite Dead Line |
What a great question! I often try to explain to those "not on the bus" that a major reason DeadHeads love the band as much as they do is that the songs themselves are so brilliantly unique--and a large reason is the very uderrated lyrics provided by Hunter and Barlow.
For me, there are of course so many, but I often turn to lines from Crazy Fingers, most notably:
"Recall the days that still are to come" (such a simple yet wonderfully paradoxical sentiment; a sweet little Zen poem floated on those gorgeous notes), and I also love
"Gone are the days/we stop to decide/where we should go/we just ride" (try that one next time you're on a long road trip--you'll smile for sure!)
Oh, and I have to mention from Terrapin:
"Inspiration/Move me brightly/Light the song with sense and color/Hold away despair"
I listened to that one a lot in the days just after Jerry's death.

I absolutely LOVE box of rain.... going to have it played at my funeral someday.... it just is such a fitting song.
Walk into splintered sunlight
Inch your way through dead dreams
to another land
Maybe you're tired and broken
Your tongue is twisted
with words half spoken
and thoughts unclear
What do you want me to do
to do for you to see you through
A a box of rain will ease the pain
and love will see you through

Man, there's so many...
"No more time to tell how, this is the season of what!"
"A lovely view of heaven, but I'd rather be with you."
...and of course...
"Inspiration, move me brightly
Light the song with sense of colour
Hold away despair
More than this I will not ask
Faced with mysteries dark and vast
Statements just seem vain at last
Some rise, some fall, some climb
To get to Terrapin
Counting stars by candlelight
Some are dim but one is bright
The spiral light on Venus
Rising first and shining best
Oh, from the north-west corner
Of a brand new crescent moon
Where crickets and cicadas sing
A rare and different tune
Terrapin Station"

Re: Favorite Dead Line |
The thing that I love about Grateful Dead lyrics is the idea that while one day you may know exactly what a particular line means, ten years (or months or days or minutes) later you may hear that same line and again know exactly what it means... and yet the two things are completely different, and yet both correct (at least to you on those two seperate occasions)... In other words, a lot of the lyrics can be very relative to time and place...
Also, there are still times, after having heard all of these lyrics hundreds and thousands of times, that out of the blue, I hear the lyrics anew for the first time again and that lightning bolt comes down and your understand a line or two for the first time... Not too long ago I had an experience where I really understood "If you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind" for the first time, after having heard it so many times... That is what makes this music so continually magical..
As for my favorite Dead line, it is an impossible task to pick just one, but I'll try to pick one I haven't seen listed here yet...
"Wildflower seed in the sand and wind, may the four winds blow you home again."

Re: Favorite Dead Line |
this is a good question. While many come to mind, I always get chills from,
"to tell sweet lies one last time, and say good -bye."
now that I am REALLY thinking about it, since I whistle any given tune any time,
"there's no need to be worrying about those people, you never see those people anyway..."
The list goes on and on.

One of my favorite lines is the one that is never sung:
"Seven-faced marble-eyed transitory dream doll"
I also love Picasso Moon (puts me in the minority, I know) but the lyrics to that song are just awesome:
"Hanging ten out on space and time, re-defining distance"
"I had a job trading bits for pieces, we'd make wrinkles, advertise them as creases"
And of course:
"Shall we go, you and I while we can,
through, the transitive nightfall of diamonds..."

Re: Favorite Dead Line |
so many have been listed, but i have not seen three of my favorites, so i gotta throw them up here...
new speedway boogie:
"now i don't know, but i've been told;
if the horse don't pull you got to carry the load.
i don't know who's backs that strong;
maybe find out before too long.
one way or another, one way or another;
one way or another, this darkness has got to give"
ship of fools:
"i won't slave for beggar's pay;
likewise, gold and jewels,
but i would slave to learn the ways
to sink your ship of fools"
finally, ripple:
"there is a road, no simple highway,
between the dawn and the dark of night,
and if you go, no one may follow
that path is for, your steps alone
ripple in still water, where there is no pebble tossed,
nor wind to blow
you who choose, to lead must follow,
but if you fall you fall alone
if you should stand, then who's to guide you?
if i knew the way, i would take you home."
p.s. - to anyone who has not done so already, please go to
www.gdlive.com, look under jerry garcia, and download garcia&grisman 12/8/91, it's 'brings tears to your eyes good,' no joke.

If I had me a shotgun
I'd blow you straight to Hell"
A funny one - "Esau, he's on roller skates today - selling real estate to someone in LA"

Re: Favorite Dead Line |
This could go on forever, but there are worse things than that, so.....I looked at all these posts and unless I missed it, no one mentioned these beautiful words:
All I know is something like a bird within her sang
All I know she sang a little while and then flew on
Tell me all that you know, I'll show you
Snow and rain...
Sleep in the stars
Don't you cry
Dry your eyes
On the wind.

Re: Favorite Dead Line |
"Lost my boots in transit babe" and all that goes along with it:
"On the day that I was born Daddy sat down and cried
I had the mark just as plain as day, I could not be denied
They say that Cain caught Abel rolling loaded dice
Ace of spades behind his ear and him not thinking twice
Half step, Mississippi uptown toodleloo
Hello baby I'm gone goodbye
Half a cup of rock and rye
Farewell to you old southern skies
I'm on my way, on my way
If all you got to live for is what you left behind
Get yourself a powder charge and seal that silver mine
Lost my boots in transit babe, pile of smoking leather
Nailed a retread to my feet and prayed for better weather"

Re: Favorite Dead Line |
More favorite lines:
"Never had such a Good time,
In my life before"
"Singing Thank You,
For A real good time"
Also i always loved the next one, even thought it's a Dylan cover, so not technically a "dead" tune.
"Forget about the Dead you left,
They will not follow you."
i always thought there was a subtle message to Heads from Jerry when he sang that....LOL

Re: Favorite Dead Line |
Comes a time when the blind man takes your hand,
says, "Don't you see, you gotta make it somehow on the dreams you still believe."
Don't give it up, you've got an empty cup only love can fill. Only love can fill.

Re: Favorite Dead Line |
A few of my favorites:
"Mama, Mama many worlds have come since I first left home" (this one rings truer and truer as I get older.)
Also a favorite that has more relevance lately with the current occupants of the White House.
"God Damn Well I Declare,
Have You Seen the Like?
Their Walls Are Made Of Cannonballs,
Their Motto Is "Don't Tread On ME" "
and:
"You thought you were the cool fool,
You never could do no wrong,
you had everything sewed up tight,
How come you lay awake all night long?"
and from the same song:
You know in spite of all you gain,
You still have to stand out in the pouring rain"

"I was borne in the desert
and raised in a lions den."
On a side note, my all time favorite line
is by Page and Plant;
"Many times I've wondered
how much there is to know."

Re: Favorite Dead Line |
i've always had a soft spot for mission in the rain.
"Ten years ago I walked this street
my dreams were ridin tall
Tonight I would be thankful
Lord, for any dream at all
Some folks would be happy
just to have one dream come true
but everything you gather
is just more that you can lose"

Re: Favorite Dead Line |
good one! one of my favorites too- I wish they had played Mission in the regular rotation- i think it would have had a nice spot in the second to last song of set one spot.
